The committee further discussed a case of harassment in the PIA. Shaheen Khalid Butt chaired the meeting of the committee. The committee was informed that the management has been spending a major part of its income on pensions and the amount has reached Rs 1.6 billion annually.
"Recently, the board of governance of the PIA decided to increase the pension in line with the directives of the President of Pakistan and federal ombudsman," the committee was told. "The PIA staff is entitled to better salaries and perks and privileges during service period, and that lifetime healthcare is also provided upon retirement; therefore, the amount of pension is less than the amount being paid by other government organizations," the official of PIA said.
The official declined any further increase in pension amount on the ground that it might increase the financial burden of the PIA which is already facing financial crunch. The committee recommended to increase the pension from current 15 percent to 36 percent as their pension is not comparable with the other government pensioners.
The PIA as an organization has been depositing amount in the pension account as approved by its board of directors. This pension fund has been placed under a Trust. The committee also sought report into the matter of Sana Waheed, Sr RTO of PIA, who was allegedly harassed at work place by Special Assistant to Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Kamran Anjum. The committee directed the PIA management to summon both the parties before the women protection committee for recording their statements.
